The Sri Lanka Technological Campus is a private, research-based global university offering study in the fields of engineering, finance & management, data science, agriculture, environmental studies, fashion, music and tourism. Founded in 2015, the campus aims to combine research-led quality academic teaching with hands-on industrial experience to produce a new generation of graduates to drive the country’s development. The project was to develop a cohesive master plan with flexible new facilities for the university while reconfiguring and reutilizing the existing buildings to create a progressive and modern educational institute possessing a definitive identity.
Located in the iconic, former satellite earth station; a sprawling 35 acre premises of serene greenery in Padukka, the campus complex intends to house academic buildings with spacious classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, library, multi-functional auditorium with a seating capacity exceeding 1700, gymnasium, student center, administration buildings, academic, non-academic, student & guest residences, sports grounds & courts, open air theatre, convenience store and its own museum.
Conceptualized as a balanced interplay of opposites, the scheme involves a myriad of building forms of varying shapes and heights tied together through the usage of natural and earthy materials to form a cohesive whole that softly blends into the lush greenery. Sensitively combining existing and efficient new structures, the master planning aims to preserve the surrounding green spaces by limiting intervention as much as possible. The core academic hub is clustered around the ‘campus green’ which is treated as the heart of the complex. The green setting includes meandering elevated foot bridges, as well as new interconnected access paths and pedestrian routes that promote movement and life through the site.
DG5 played an integral role in the project development process, actively participating from the initial pre-feasibility stage. The team collaborated closely with both the client and investors, engaging in assessing the competitive positioning & feasibility of the project to guiding the site selection as well as crafting a vision and concept and determining land use and planning.
