The One Nine Tower is a nineteen storey hotel located in Colombo 01, on a plot adjacent to the old Dutch hospital-a heritage building dating to the Dutch colonial era. Situated on a site that acts as a gateway to the heritage zone within Fort, overlooking prominent high-rises in the immediate vicinity, the design of the hotel was governed by the client’s requirement to maximize the site’s development potential and the adherence to the regulatory stipulation of responding to its significant historical context. The colonial architectural style base of the building takes a nod at the heritage of the locale while the modern glazed tower relates to the high-rises in the area. The minimally embellished, simple glazed wrapping of the tower ensures that the design focus remains on the colonial base, showcasing a perfect weave between heritage and modernity.
