Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa (ITUM)
The Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa (ITUM) is an engineering college of the University of Moratuwa located in Diyagama, Sri Lanka. Spanning over 19 acres, the complex constitutes of academic and laboratory buildings with modern facilities catering to 2,000 students, student hostels with 1,000 rooms, an indoor sports hall, auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,400, a visitor’s guest house, staff accommodation blocks and a shopping centre.
The colour palette and patterns within the complex reflect the high-tech nature of the institute and its teaching curriculum. The contrasting dark and light external facades are accentuated by pixelated fenestrations and complimentary yellow wall patterns. Similarly, lobby spaces are adorned with technology inspired futuristic artwork. The eleven storey tall, seemingly permeable library complex and administrative department act as a way finder to navigate through the complex.
The building complex has prioritized environmental sustainability through its overall design. This is evident in the natural light filled corridors and interior spaces that effectively capture the tropical sun. Most of the existing vegetation has been retained to form a natural landscape between the buildings and main playground areas, with additional turfed landscaping. A Rainwater Harvesting System has been incorporated as a means of maintaining the landscape, while all sewerage and wastewater are set to be treated by an in-house sewerage treatment plant.
